Sassy, Single, & Satisfied by Michelle McKinney Hammond. This book is a compilation of some 67 little stories (chapterettes) wherein the author shares a host of secrets on how to love the life you're living and to be single, sassy, and, satisfied. She challenges women to realize their primary purpose for existence and to rediscover all the incredible opportunities they have regardless of whether or not Mr. Right comes along.
    The 67 chapterettes are divided into three parts: Meditations on Life, Love and Men. In these pages she talks about Start with Surrender, The Gift of Giving, The Secret of Love, Keep Hope Alive, Love in Action, Never Alone, Perfect Match, Gems in Disguise, How to Handle Raging Hormones, and Get Your Own Man.

Secrets of an Irresistible Woman by Michelle McKinney Hammond. This book is about the, "Smart Rules for Capturing His Heart," as the subtitle says. The author shares how, by following the right rules, you'll be able to experience joy and contentment in your life right now. In practical ways, she reveals all the secrets that make a woman irresistible to the man who's worth marrying.
    Some of the 18 chapters (or Principles) are entitled, Develop Good Shopping Skills, Avoid the Mission Field, Protect Your Jewels, use a Lot of Seasoning, Learn How to Dress, Know What You Want, Know If He's the One, The Pleasure Principle. The book concludes with a Study Guide with discussion questions tied to Scripture passages and based on the Principles in the book.

Single Adults by George Barna. Author-researcher Barna examines the 82 million adults in the US who are not presently married. He describes each of the three distinct single populations (divorced, widowed, never-married) in detail and says that, "Each group is quite different from the other." The book is actually based on eight national research studies among single adults conducted by Barna's research company during the past two years. The author examines such areas self image, lifestyle, goals, values, morals, relationships, demographics, and religiosity. Throughout the book Barna discusses the role of faith in people's lives.
    Some of the nine chapter titles are: You're Not Alone If You're Single, How Single Adults Live, The Role of Faith, The Religious Practices of Singles, What Single Adults Believe, Are Christian Singles Different from Others? and, Making the Most of Ministry to Singles.
    From Issachar Resources (div. of Barna Research Group, Ventura, CA), this 162-page book was published in 2002 and sells for $16.00 (trade cover).

Single Again: The Uncertain Journey by Jim Smoke. As the subtitle says, this book offers "hope for widowed and divorced Christian." It provides a faith-filled guide for those walking through unfamiliar territory. The author deals with the challenges facing the newly singled person, discusses the rebuilding of support systems, talks about the issues of single parenting and re-entering the social scene and embraces the healing process so that life can begin again.
    Some of the 17 chapter titles include: Life Is a Journey Built on Hope, Growing Strong at the Broken Places, Staring Down Loneliness, In Search of a New Community, Navigating the Dating Rapids, Facing the Fears that Paralyze, Guidelines for Singles Parents, What Would Jesus Do? Healing the Hurts, and Coming to Grips with the S-Word. The book concludes with a series of questions for personal reflection or group discussion.
     Published in 1999 by Servant (Vine) Publications (Ann Arbor, MI, 800-458-8505), this 214-page book sold for $10.99 (trade cover).

Single Again by Victoria Jaycox. This book is "A Guide for Women Starting Over," as the subtitle says. Here the author shows how older, mature women can do more than just survive being widowed or divorced. She shows them how they can live happy, fulfilling lives and even improve themselves thanks to their new lifestyle. She helps them gain the hope, confidence, and perseverance necessary for success.
    The 13 chapter titles are: Facing the Chasm, Coping with the Stress that Accompanies Change, A Tiger by the Tail: Dealing with Lawyers, Gain Financial Expertise, Get a Job (or Keep the One You Have), Turn to Wise Friends--Where You Can Find Them, Tap into Religion, Discharge Your Emotional Overload, What Kind of Life Do You Want?, A Nest of Your Own, Step by Step to a Career, Pursue Your Passion and, To Be or Not to Be (Married).
   Published in 1999 by W.W. Norton & Co. (New York), this 334-page book sold for $24.95 (hard cover).
Single Again Handbook by Thomas Jones. The subtitle aptly describes the book, "Finding Meaning and Fulfillment When You're Single Again. " It offers the encouragement and support to regain balance, find fulfillment, and build healthy relationships in the wake of divorce.

    Published in 1993 by Thomas Nelson, this 357-page book sold for $12.99 (trade).

Single and Complete by Judy Douglass and Kathryn Long. This book was written by Judy Douglass and was first published in 1977 under the title Old Maid Is a Dirty Word. It is the story of how she gained victory over the frustrations of being single. (Note: She eventually married at the age of 31.) Some of her chapter titles are: Every Girl Is Entitled to a Husband, I Know He's the One, God's Woman for God's Man.
    The second half of the book is a Bible study based upon the chapters in the first half. The Bible study portion was written by Kathryn Long and is appropriate for individual or group study.
     This 105 page book was published by Here's Life Publishers in 1986 and sold for $5.95 (trade).

Single and Content by Dana Anders, Nathan Clement, Chnis Conti, and Lana Trent. The four authors propose to encourage other Christian singles through their own stories and those of never-married Christian music artists. The book also helps you gain perspective by comparing your situation with the results of a survey taken of 555 other single adults. Their aim is to help you discover the secret of being content in your singleness.

    The book is divided into five major sections: From the Freezer to the Microwave in the Same Box, God Gave All of Us 24 Hours in the Day, Not Yet Promoted to the Grown-up Table, Looking for the Holy Grail Woman-or Man, and You can't Waller in It. Some of the topics dealt with in these sections are: To Rent or Own, Eating Habits, Insuring Yourself, Vacations, Serving in Church,When a Friend Gets Married, Going to Reunions, The Perfect Date, Staying Pure, and Opening the Gift of Singleness.
    From Word Publishing (Nashville) in 1999, this 243-page book sold for $12.99 (trade).

Single and Feeling Good by Harold Ivan Smith. In this book the author points out that single life can be positive, often extremely creative and even satisfying. He helps singles to feel good about themselves and shows the rich possibilities of not being married.
     Some of the issues Smith deals with are: loneliness, chastity, building an identity, dating, rejection, intimacy, breaking up, and the frustrating search for Mr/ Mrs. Right.
     Published in 1987 by Abingdon, this 160 book sold for $9.95 (trade)

Single and Human by Ada Lum. The author believes that one can lead a full and happy life and still be single. Having faced loneliness, she applies Christian principles to relationships with couples, families, children and even employers. Having faced feelings of inferiority and frustration, she discusses accepting oneself, resolving inner sexual tensions and continuing to grow as one becomes older. Writing this book from the perspective of a single woman, Ada Lum has much to offer to singles we well as to couples who want to be more sensitive to singles.
    From InterVarsity Press in 1976, it sold for $1.95 (pb).

Single and Whole by Rhena Taylor. In this book the author shares the joys and advantages she has found in being unmarried. She views the single life as a high calling from God, a state in which close fellowship with him, single-minded devotion to his service, and love of his people can reach heights often denied married people.

     Taylor, a missionary in Kenya, does not avoid the hard issues but gives practical advice on such topics as love, self-worth, the desire to be married and the challenges of Christian commitment.
    This 96 page book was published in 1984 by InterVarsity Press and sold for $2.95 (pb).

Single...But Not Alone by Mary Strebeck (editor). This booklet is a collection of 11 stories by singles or former singles. Each contributor "shows how singleness has been turned into an asset to be able to serve the Lord more freely, thus giving purpose and joy for living..." The editor writes the eleventh chapter. At the conclusion of each chapter there is a section of discussion questions for use in a group setting.
    A few of the chapter titles are: Feeling Good About Being Single, When a Wife Becomes a Widow, The Positive Side of Being Single, The Single and a Caring Church, and Single...But Not Alone.There is a leader's guide that is to be used in conjunction with the book for group discussions. The leader's guide was prepared by Jim Towns and Mary Strebeck.
     Published in 1982 by JM Productions, the 80 page booklet sold for $4.95 and the leader's guide for $1.95. (JM Productions, Box 837, Brentwood, TN 37027)

The Single Experience by Keith Miller and Andrea Wells Miller. In this book two well-known Christian writers share openly and honestly about their feelings and discoveries as singles. They say in the preface, "Here we are presenting a witness of what we have seen and heard personally as we have tried to come to grips with singleness and with God."
     Andrea and Keith contribute a wealth of helpful insights as they describe how they have faced an array of challenges common to singles including: coping with loneliness, searching for new identity, rearing children alone, thinking through sexual choices, and overcoming the fear of broken relationships.
     This book can help persons from various backgrounds, even marrieds, to gain surprisingly valuable insights about themselves and their closest relationships.

Single Focus by George Barna. In this book the author identifies the various types of singles and reveals their individual needs, specifically for the church. He shines a spotlight on their mind-sets and lifestyles, everything from their heartfelt hopes to their unspoken fears.
    The nine chapter titles are: You're Not Alone If You're Single, The Self-Identification of Singles, How Single Adults Live, The Matters of the Heart, The Role of Faith, The Religious Practices of Singles, What Singles Believe, Are Christian Singles Different from Others?, and Making the Most of Ministry to Singles.
    Published in 2003 by Regal/Gospel Light (Ventura, CA), this 144-page book sells for $17.99 (hard cover).
Single Purpose by Norm Wright. This book is a collection of 90 devotionals for single adults. That's one a day for three months. The devotions remind you that while you may be single, you are not alone. They give you a moment each day to pause, reflect and draw upon the strength of the Lord. They offer you wisdom, guidance, and sound biblical advice gained from a lifetime of counseling Christian singles by the author.
    Some of the devotional titles are Patterns for Problem Solving, Lonely or Alone, Reversing Rejection, Lust or Love, Guard Your Heart, Our Internal Critic, Power Failure, Suffering and Grace, Prayer and Sex, Stormy Weather, What Am I So Depressed?, Hang in There, All Work and No Play, and Yes,You Can Change.

Single Servings: 90 Devotions to Feed Your Soul by Lee Warren.. The author guides singles through 90 devotions that help singles process their thoughts and find encouragement. He stresses the importance of community, controlling physical desires, and ultimately embracing life as Christ intended it. He offers and honest look at the struggles and benefits of the single life and, through biblical and contemporary stories, encourages Christians to find satisfaction in Christ.
    The 90 devotions are divided into the following categories: Community, Completeness, Emotional Health, Physical Desires, Longing for Love, God’s Training, No Fair!, Expectations and Embracing Life.
    Published in 2005 by Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group (Grand Rapids, MI), this book sold for $12.99 (trade cover).


A Single Thought by Allen Hadidian. This book deals with some of the common freedoms and frustrations found in a single person's life. The author, an associate pastor to the college department at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, CA, draws practical principles from biblical references regarding the states of marriage and singleness. He dispels some of the myths and misconceptions about singleness and helps Christians develop a fresh outlook on the place of the single person in our society.
     Hadidian insists that single life can be exciting right now! "It doesn't have to be boring or second-rate. In fact, he says, "God desires that a life of singleness be absolutely first-rate. It can be a lifetime of learning, discovering, growing, and giving."
    Fom Moody Press, it was a 1981 release and sold for $3.95 (pb).



Single to God edited by Doug Fagerstrom. This book is a compilation of the prayers of 100 different single adults. These singles share intimate moments of praise, frustration, and hope. Each emotion or experience shared in prayer is accompanied by a Scripture passage and a thought from a great Christian thinker.
      From Baker Books in 1994, this 128-page book sold for $11.99 (hard). 

Single to Single by Douglas L. Fagerstrom (editor). This book is a year-long treasury of commentary and personal response to selected passages of the Bible. Each week of this devotional begins with a "Day One Commentary" from over 50 single adult leaders in the nation. The devotional on the remaining six days of each week are "Applications" written by six single adults from the ministry of the leader who has written the "Day One" for that week. Each day's devotional concludes with a New Testament and an Old Testament selection related to that particular devotion.
      Another feature of this book is the beginning two chapters which deal with why have devotions and why some people fail in their devotions. The book concludes with a workbook chapter which invites the reader to record their own spiritual journey.
    From Victor Books in 1991, this 344-page book sold for $9.99 (trade).

Single Voices by Bruce Yoder and Imo Jeanne Yoder (editors). This book is a collection of seven different topics each written by a different person and each made into a chapter. All seven writers are single but one and speak from the Mennonite tradition.
     The life of singleness is viewed differently by each writer. Three of the chapters deal with singleness issues that are church related (Scripture, spirituality, and models of ministry.) Three speak to issues common to all singles (sexuality, relationships, and professional life). The seventh examines forces that affect the development of a single person's identity.
     For groups that wish to use the material in this book, there is a discussion section which encourages reflection and feedback.
     This book was a 1982 release from Herald Press and sold for $6.95 (pb).

Singleness by Dorothy Payne. This book is written for single women and will suggest new ways for them to enjoy themselves and will help them remain single happily if that is what they choose.
     In her introduction, Payne says, "For the first time in history single women may enjoy a life with meaning and fullness, with positive energies released for their well-being and for helping others."
     The author considers the opportunities open to these women, their special needs, along with the stereotyping, discrimination, and other problems they have in common. She explores the freedom, self-development and self-determination open to single women and offers them practical suggestions for achieving wholeness.
     This book is one in a series of 12 published for women by The Westminster Press, 1983. This 112 page book sold for $5.95 (trade).

Singles Alive! by Jim Towns. The main message of this book is that single life does not have to be lonely; it can, and should, include positive, fulfilling relationships with one's inner self, with other men and women, and with God. In this book, the author looks closely at single life and offers helpful advice for the self-improvement of the single Christian in each of these areas: self, others, and God.
     Some of the chapter titles include: Reality, Relationships, Resolution, Renewal, Reconstruction, and Rejoice.
     This 143 page book was published by Pelican Publishing Co. in 1984 and sold for $9.95 (hard).

Singles Ask by Harold Ivan Smith. Subtitled "Answers to Questions about Relationships and Sexual Issues," this book is the result of question and answer sessions the author has conducted over the past nine years. His answers come not only from those discussions with singles but also from his own research and personal experience as a single person himself.
     This 159 page book contains 125 questions divided into 14 chapters. Some of the major topics include: "What Women Ask About Men," "What Men Ask About Women," "Coping with Divorce," "Relationships with the Ex-spouse," "Sexuality and Faith," "How Far is Too Far?" and "What about AIDS and STDs?" The book concludes with advice on how to find a good counselor and with a selected bibliography for further reading.
     Published by Augsburg Publishing House in 1988, this book sold for $8.95 (trade).

Singles: Committed and Free by Bob Spray. This book is designed to appeal to all types of singles (divorced, never-married, widowed). It explores such topics as freedom of choice, emotional honesty, steadfast love and loyalty, trust and faith, conflict resolution and forgiveness, reconciliation, structure and flexibility, and forgiveness.
     The six chapters of this 128 page book deal with commitment and relating to: self, God, family, friends, non-Christians, and Christians.
     Published by Convention Press in 1988, this 127-page book sold for $3.25 (trade).

Singles Plus by Ray Mossholder. This material, based on the author's Singles Plus Seminars, tackles many of the tough issues facing Christian singles today. It offers humor and Bible-based insights on such practical concerns as dating, sexual temptation, loneliness, family pressures, and the desire to marry. Of particular value is the author's description of a dozen "Essential Potential" qualities any prospective mate should possess as well as his list of the wrong reasons for getting married.
    Some of the 11 chapter titles are: The Gift of Being Single, Becoming Whole, The Dating Game, How to Make Yourself Attractive to Others, What is Real Love?, How to Keep Your Sex Drive in Neutral, and What If I Never Get Married? Each chapter ends with a set of questions to stimulate private reflection or group discussion.
     Published in 1991 by Creation House, this 197 page book sold for $8.95 (trade).

Singling: A New Way to Live the Single Life by John R. Landgraf. The author, a former seminary president who has experienced the pain of divorce in his own life, focuses on the term "singling" as a new method by which one becomes healthily single, on the inside as well as on the outside. His message is that being single is no longer a passageway between puberty and paring, but a way to rethink being alone. He tells how to become single (even if married), how to be whole without a primary relationship, and how to stay whole within oneself.
     His 13 chapters are divided into three categories: The Singling Way, an explanation of his approach, Entryway, ways people become single: divorce, death, delay, design, and Pathways, various issues, policies, practical matters, etc. that singles deal with along the journey; these include anger, sex, friendships, and coupling.
    Published in 1990 by Westminster/John Knox Press, this 180-page book sold for $10.95 (trade).

So You're Single by Margaret Clarkson. Ms. Clarkson, well-known Canadian author, educator and hymn-writer, not only admits the reality of aloneness without a marriage partner but draws from the depths of her personal and practical experience of singleness to share with us God's ways with her. As one who has tested herself and God over the years, she has earned the right to be heard! Ann Kiemel says this book is, "The most profound statement on being single that I have ever read."
     From the Harold Shaw Publishers in 1978, it sold for $2.95 (pb).

Successfully Single by Yvonne G. Baker. Since 85% of today's women (according to the book) will spend at least part of their adult lives as single, they may need someone to help answer some questions about a few of the practical issues of life.
     Each chapter in this book deals with one of those practical areas. Hence, this book is really a practical guide for women who may have questions about: appearance, automobiles, chemical dependency, death, employment, health, holidays, housing, insurance, legal matters, money management, organization, retirement, and security.
    The premise of this book is that any woman can be successfully single with the practical advice offered in its chapters, an attitude and approach based upon the Bible, and determination to live as the complete person God intended.
     This 188 page book was published in 1985 by Accent Books and sold for $6.95 (pb).

Suddenly Single by Jim Smoke. In this book, Smoke, author and minister to singles, relates some of the experiences single persons have shared with him as he has travelled across the country speaking at singles conferences. He offers counsel, encouragement, and practical advice about how to pick up the pieces and start over after becoming "suddenly single."
    Some of the chapter titles are: I'm So Lonely I could Die, It's a Jungle Out There, Filling the Potholes, New Career Beginnings, Catch the Serendipity Spirit!, New Pathways: Remarriage, and Being Me and Growing Free. Each chapter concludes with a set of questions that can be used for stimulating discussion.
     This 192-page book is a 1982 release from Revell and sold for $8.95 (hard).

Table for One by Camerin Courtney. As the subtitle says, this book is about "The Savvy Girl's Guide to Singleness." It's a compilation of the lessons the author has learned from chats with God, her single friends, counseling sessions, readers of her singles column, and trial and error. And she offers a reminder that true satisfaction isn't found in the arms of "Mr. Right" but in making the most of wherever God has you, even if that's at a table for one. Of particular value is her discussion of the types of friends every single woman needs to have and how certain friendships with guys can help keep loneliness, anger, and unrealistic expectations at bay.
    Some of the 17 chapter titles are: Solo on Sunday Morning, Singles Groupies and Dropouts, Home of the Holidays, Maternal Urges and Lusty Longings, This Isn't What I Expected, Three Reasons Why Men aren't the Enemy, Male Bashing--and Other Guilty Pleasures, and Going Solo.

They Were Single, Too by David Hoffeditz. The author’s purpose is to take a fresh look at what the Bible says about being single. In doing this he explores the lives of eight individuals in the Bible who were single at some point in their adult life. He not only writes about their blessings of living solo but also their discouragements, disappointments and struggles.
    Each of the eight chapters focuses on a different person in the Bible: Paul, Anna, Martha, Jeremiah, Ruth, Joseph, Nehemiah, and John the Baptist. He concludes each chapter with a conclusion followed by questions for individual reflection or group discussion. In studying the lives of these eight persons, the author explores how God intends single people to live and demonstrate how one can truly serve God and be single.

The Tree in the Middle of My Garden
by Moses Caesar. The author says that just telling hurting people that God is going to take care of everything does not necessarily solve the problems within their heart and mind. They need something solid to lean on during their troubled times. This book will construct steps in the journey through pain and crisis. No matter the situation or the season of a single, singles need solid biblical principles. By looking at the perception singles have of their problems and providing instruction in this book, singles will be empowered and encouraged with the growth in faith in the midst of their difficulties. They will learn about hope, trust, joy, surrender and more.

   Some of the 21 chapter titles include: The Voyage of a Lifetime, Hope in Hopelessness, Guarding Peace, Rescue Me, The Language of Our Love and Hands of Grace. The center and last sections can be used as individual Bible Studies or group studies to help singles work through their divorces or loneliness.

Turning Your World Right Side Up by Jim Smoke. This book, based on the author's former release Suddenly Single, offers hope and healing for the divorced and widowed and helps them ease the struggle of adjusting to singleness again. The author guides the reader to a better understanding of their frustrations, doubts and fears through "personal-growth questions" that conclude each chapter.

When You're on Your Own by Ruth Senter. This book is really for the young woman who is making the transition into adulthood As it's subtitle say, "Ten Things Every Young Woman Needs to Know as She Faces an Adult World." The book deals with such coming-of-age questions as: How can I be strong and still be feminine?, What do I need to do to survive over the long haul?, How do I take care of myself without being selfish, and How can I continue to grow spiritually?
    The ten chapter titles are: What You Need to Know about Yourself, You Are Worth a Lot, You Need Time Alone, You Cannot Change Everything, You Are More Important than What You Do, You Need Others, You Don't Have to Be Weak, You Can Enjoy Being a Woman, God Loves You, God Forgives and Forgets, God Has Given You All You Need.
    This 126-page book was published in 1993 by Campus Books/Zondervan and sold for $9.99 (trade).

Where One is Gathered in His Name by Dan R. Crawford. This book is actually a workbook filled with 100 daily devotions to enable single people to find a balance between worship of God and their service among people. In each of the devotions the author, a professor at Southwestern Baptist Seminary, offers a Bible-based thought, a space for the reader to respond, a prayer to complete, and a section to challenge the reader to go deeper.
    Published by Broadman Press in 1986, this 200 page book sold for $6.95 (hard).

Wholly Single by Julia Duin. This little booklet is part of the publisher's NetWork Discussion Guides which address important contemporary issues from a biblical perspective and are designed for group studies. The eight studies in this discussion guide will help singles tackle such issues as loneliness, celibacy, sexual purity, and intimacy.
     Published by Harold Shaw in 1991, this 48-page guide sold for $3.50 (trade).

Wide My World, Narrow My Bed by Luci Swindoll. This book, written by Chuck Swindoll's sister, is about the author's personal philosophy of single life; how to live it and love it.
     She discusses such basics as the importance of thinking through one's belief systematically, and the necessity for compromise in making choices. Some of her chapter titles are Credo, Health, Humor, Hospitality, Academics, Arts, Associates, Career, and Cash.
     A 1982 release from Multnomah Press, this 175-page book sold for $6.96 (trade).
